Hi,
users can not discard from the online-user list individually. Sometimes user don't want to be visible (and it is a real juridical problem). So a simple solution could be a bindig of the individual visibility for being online to the public_profile flag. Why i should be visible as online-user, when i don't want to have a public profile? The only thing is to be directly obtainable per mail, from the personal desktop. My first expectation as a normal user would be: if i don't publish my profile, i am also discarded from the online-user list.
Another perhaps more logical way could be a new user_pref flag: "discard_as_online_user" in the user profile. What do you think?

I would definitely vote for a separation of "putting my profile online" and "showing my online status to others".
