After upgrading from ILIAS 3.10.9 to ILIAS 4.0.3 a small number of our users cannot access their mailbox anymore. The receive the following error message: ilTree::getNodeData(): No node_id given!

How can we fix this?

First try to do a systemcheck on your (backup of) 3.10 Administration.
This should fix any errors and you should be able to upgrade to 4.0.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any other solution? We are running on 4.0.3 for two weeks now and the affected users did not realize their problem up to now. So going back to our two weeks old backup is not a good solution. I guess it must be a broken link in the database. Any other ideas how to fix this without rolling back?

Have you tried running the systemcheck on your 4.0?

If nothing works you can setup your old system and have your users fetch their mail. Exporting the mail from 3.10 and merging it with the 4.0 would require code I think.
